Writing is magic!   The words come from nowhere and take up space.  These words are content to stay, where the writing puts them, and not return to wherever they came from.  The words do not get homesick.  Where they are is their home.

I would love to tour the place where the words come from.  I have asked the words, “Can you tell me about where you are from?”

“No,” they reply.  “We have been sworn to secrecy.  Use your imagination.”

Okay, so what is the place like where the words come from?   Do lots of alphabets,  from all the languages,  live there?  Do ideas live there?  Do the alphabets and ideas live in houses, or on pieces of paper?   What is the weather like there?  Always sunny with a chance of sentences?

Do I really want to know?  Will knowing where the words come from take away from the magic and mystery of writing?  How much fun  is lost when you know how  magicians do their tricks.   I understand why Norman Mailer called writing, The Spooky Art.
